On a much lighter note today, courtesy of whoever writes the stories on Fifa.com, somebody who is obviously well trained in the Fifa art of "write a serious report and ignore any obvious irony or any potential self-inflicting humour".
Russia 2018 announced the names of the World Cup stadiums and the fact that absolutely no imagination went into naming them (maybe it's a Russian thing?) is made even more amusing by the fact that it is reported as though the Great Leader himself (you know the one who fights bears) named the stadiums and they are the most creative names ever. The stadium where the final will be played, in the Luzhniki district of Moscow, is called the Luzhniki Staduim. The Mordovia Arena is in the Republic of Mordovia, the Kazan Staduim in Kazan, the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium is in Nizhny Novgorod, and on and on it goes.
Apparently, the names of 4 of the stadiums are "connected to other
local cultural or football aspects." I'll give them some credit for
Sochi, but how about the Spartak Stadium, named after the team that plays there,
Spartak Moscow?
Bring out the Nobel Prize for cultural references. Sure, it doesn’t exist but surely Putin can talk to somebody and get that sorted.
