The Singing Goalkeeper of Homs

Day -982. WorldCup2018.

Syria. In 2014 Iraq were the miracle qualifiers, a country at war. Syria have a long way to go but despite the war, the fleeing of many of their players, the refusal of others to represent the Assad regime and the use of younger players they have won 3 out 3 of their qualifiers. The story will carry on, as will the indirect link with Russian bombs, possibly strengthening Assad's position in Damascus where incredibly most of the Syrian football league carries on as opposed to places like Homs where football is sadly impossible. But it was here that "The Singing Goalkeeper of Homs" became a hero, from goalkeeper to leader of the revolution through his singing. And for more incredible stories of football in an incredibly war ravaged country...
