Syria. In 2014 Iraq were the miracle qualifiers, a country at war.
Syria have a long way to go but despite the war, the fleeing of many of
their players, the refusal of others to represent the Assad regime and
the use of younger players they have won 3 out 3 of their qualifiers.
The story will carry on, as will the indirect link with Russian bombs,
possibly strengthening Assad's position in Damascus where incredibly
most of the Syrian football league carries on as opposed to places like
Homs where football is sadly impossible. But it was here that "The
Singing Goalkeeper of Homs" became a hero, from goalkeeper to leader of
the revolution through his singing. And for more incredible stories of
football in an incredibly war ravaged country...
