Syria, as Fifa see it.

Day -981. WorldCup2018‬.

Reading about Putin, the manipulator, and Ukraine makes it easy to see how Fifa couldn't say no to giving Russia the World Cup. More of that to come. In the meantime, in preparation for this week's round of Asian qualifiers, I came across this gem of non-political reporting on fifa.com. Because, you know Fifa don't get involved in politics in any way, right? What you would expect to be the main story behind Syria's match against Japan is referred to as the "ongoing tragic events". Yes, because that's all it is.

And for comic relief, Syria's captain Abdelrazaq Al Hussain gives a very technical description of Singapore's tactics against Japan and how they stopped Japan scoring by "playing realistically and responsibly". Well done chaps, how realistic of you to realize that without being responsible Japan might have scored a couple of goals.
